The first time I was REALLY kissed....

Congrats to Heather Davis on her debut novel, Never Cry Werewolf. You should own this book. Poor Heather had her release date pushed back at least three times that I can remember, yet she never got down about it. I know this book is going to be flying off the shelves, especially with Halloween right around the corner and people hankering for scary things (like werewolves!).
(Buy me, buy me, buy me!)

For some reason I had a super-hard time thinking of a blog post. The topic was easy enough (the first time I -insert whatever you did here- but I think maybe it was too open-ended for me. I finally settled on my first romantic kiss. Not my first nervous peck on the lips. Or the first time I was French-kissed at school only to be busted by my principal. But the first time I was kissed and everything was perfect. The guy. The music. The ambiance.
(It didn't go exactly like this but you get the picture!)

Okay, so the ambiance was a 1978 Thunderbird with extremely dark tinted windows. But that's why it was so incredibly perfect. We could sit in the driveway and my parents couldn't see anything! I had been flirting back and forth with this guy, I'll call him Rod, for a while. We were both on Student Council and I think he was driving me home from a meeting or something. A song called "The Flame" by Cheap Trick came on. (Yes, I am THAT old). I can remember the way he touched the side of my face and then we were just kissing. And it was the most awesome kiss of all time (okay, I was 15, I didn't have a lot to fall back on). I could have sworn there were sparks flying all around us. Then my mom started flashing the porch light off and on, completely killing our perfect buzz.

And even though that was twenty-one years ago and Rod turned out to be a pretty big tool, it is still a moment I think back on when I write kissing scenes for my books. It is a memory of growing up that I treasure. Not because of who I was with, but for who I was, and still am, especially when I hear Cheap Trick.

Do you have any perfect mental snapshots that you treasure?

And do you think Shelby and Austin share the perfect kiss in Never Cry Werewolf? I guess you'll just have to read it and see. You can also post a comment for your chance to win a copy!

xo,
Stephanie

One mental snapshot from my high school days that makes me smile happened when my friend came over for nachos on a Saturday afternoon. Only when they were ready did we realize the sauce was extra hot instead of mild. Determined to eat them, we were chugging grape kool-aid after each bite, and laughing the entire time. :)

Umm perfect pictures, ok this is no where near romantic, but I am a huge hockey fan. and about 7 years ago? I went to the blood collect organised by the Montreal Canadiens hockey club and met my favorite hockey player. I was SO happy! I have pictures and I have a 2 millions dollars simle on those haha.

I sent you the interview questions this morning btw =)

Steph, being a huge fan of your Aspen Brooks novels, I already knew you could turn my heart over with your romance writing. But I will tell you that your own story evoked one of my own--not my first kiss, but one that knocked my socks off--and I thank you for that visit down memory lane! ;)

Congrats to Heather on the release of the book we all know is going to fly off shelves!

The meeting with the hero of my life - Kaori Yuki, an artist from Japan. It's one of my most precious memories. :D

My first slow dance. I was about 13 and terribly shy, especially around boys. Went to a church friend's b-day party and was a wallflower most of the night. A slow song came on (still remember to this day what song it was) and everyone coupled off. I just knew I wasn't gonna get asked. Then one of the guys (one that I thought was SO cute) came and asked me to dance. I was scared, but he insisted...& who am I to deny him the privilege.

Anyway, I'll always remember that dance cos it was my first slow dance and it was with a cutie pie. Nothing came of it, except we became good friends. I don't think he even knows (or remembers) what that did for me.

My mental snapshot is nothing spectacular but it is a memory that I love. I once went to the school library during the holidays with some friends to do our homework but the library was closed so we ended up studying on the school lawn. I remembered the way the sun spilled down on us. We were young and carefree and I remembered thinking, man, this is a great moment.

One of my favorite "mental snapshots" is the day a guy I really liked asked me out. I was so excited. Unfortunately [maybe not], our first date ended with a trip to the hospital with my little brother. It makes for a great anecdote when I meet more of his ridiculously large family.

First of all, YES - Shelby and Austin have an amazing kiss somewhere in Never Cry. Very romantic, if I do say so myself. ;)

I don't have a mental snapshot of a kiss, but I do have a snapshot of laying in the grass, eating wild strawberries with my little neighbor in the country. We found dragons in the clouds. Later, I came back to that image while writing a scene for The Clearin, my spring book. So peaceful, that day.

First kiss, huh? My very first one was in Kindergarten. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had the biggest crush on him. We even got married at recess! Wow. That was forever ago. :)
