The True Meaning of Halloween

I know that, historically, Halloween is a holiday steeped in the tradition of frightening away evil spirits with carved turnips. And over the decades it's become more about getting dressed up as scary, disgusting, fantastical, or otherwise escapist costumes. But, let's be honest about the true meaning of Halloween. Candy.

I don't usually crave candy. I'm more of an ice cream (hello Ben & Jerry's White Russian!) and cheese girl. But whenever Halloween rolls around I can't seem to get it out of my mind. It's everywhere: at the grocery story, the drugstore, the bank, the giant bag in the garage desperately hoping to stick around long enough for the trick-or-treaters.

If I eat candy the rest of the year it's usually something like Milk Duds at the movie theatre or a Skor bar from the drugstore. When October rolls around, though, it's like my taste buds take a turn and suddenly I'm interested in things that do nothing for me the other eleven months of the year.

Some candy I only eat during the Halloween season:

  • Smarties
  • Candy Corn
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Dum Dums, Blow Pops, Tootsie Pops, and other suckers
  • Mini candy bars (especially Snickers and Butterfingers)

What about you? Do you have any favorite Halloween candy that you could care less about the rest of the year?

Hugs,
TLC

Tera, I love this mini 100 Grand bars, mini Snickers and mini Butterfingers. But don't let the word mini fool you--I generally eat 2 or 3 at a sitting!

I never went Trick or Treating when I was younger, so I never relly got any sweets. We bought sweets as a family to give to the kids who came knocking, but I'm not a sweetie person really, so I never nicked any. I prefer chocolate - and what we buy is generally lolly pops and proper sugary sweets. Not much chocolate, if any.
IT's Christmas when I get to eat chocolates I don't normally eat. With the big Roses, Quality Street, and Celebrations tins bought, I stuff my face with the plain cnhocolate ones. Then there's big tubes of Smarties that Father Christmas sometimes leaves with everything else - even if I am now 22 :D Christmas is when I gorge, not Halloween.

There were some things I only had at Halloween as a kid, so they really bring back Halloween memories for me... Like Sweet Tarts, Tootsie Rolls, and that weird hard pink buggle gum... :-)

Whoppers! I totally crave them and Milk Duds around this time of year. And... you know how I feel about gummi bears!

Normally, though- I'm a pure dark chocolate girl. :)

>>No, I eat chocolate year around. I love, love, love the taste of chocolate. I don't know how anyone could not enjoy that taste. Yum.
