It's Girl Scout Cookie Time!

Maybe you didn’t know that as a kid, I was a Girl Scout, and then as a mother, I was a Girl Scout leader. And that my favorite activities at both times included selling (and eating!) Girl Scout cookies.

And of course, it’s Girl Scout Cookie time again. As usual, I will buy from neighborhood girls and my nieces, and yet I always seem to "need" an extra box or two from Scouts selling outside of the supermarket. (And Thin Mints freeze so well...)

But this week, I happened upon some startling cookie news: the Girls Scouts have decided to only sell six kinds, saying they are cutting back on variety to make their sales more profitable.

Here are the six types of cookies they are still selling:

Thin Mints
Tagalongs
Samoas
Lemon Chalet Crèmes
Do-Si-Does
Trefoils

I am breathing easy because these six include my favorites. But gone are the chocolate chip, the vanilla, the berry, the sugar-free...and I am right in remembering something with gingerbread at one point?

So tell us, does this cookie list include your favorite? Are there some that you will miss?

My daughter is a Daisy and her troop is also selling Dulce De Leche (bite size) and Thank U Berry Munch in addition to what you listed. I wonder if it varies by where you live. My favorites are Samoas and Lemon Chalet Cremes.

Hey, Christie, thank you for sharing! I picked that up from a national news story--as a former Brownie and leader, it caught my interest. Now I'll need to go more research. Can anyone else tell us if their troop is selling more than those six?

Those are my favorites ones too, and I think the originals. Nothing like the good old days, right?

Ooh. I like those Tagalogs. They are dangerous. I am really glad I don't know any girl scouts, though there are bound to be some outside the local market...

Somaoas, but you won't have to twist my arm to eat any of those varieties.

I'm still a Girl Scout, currently working on my Gold Award. I love cookies but I do hate that the prices have risen.

Thanks for mentioning your favorites, everyone. And Jess, way to go on your Gold Award!

wow--this brings back SO MANY memories!!!

I think it's weird that once I stopped being a Girl Scout, I stopped seeing Girl Scouts--I used to have to go door-to-door (sometimes by myself--gasp!), and now they all set up at malls and grocery stores.--and the internet!??!?!?

I haven't seen any Girl Scouts lately (although I will definitely start keeping an eye out!!!)--But I know that when my sister moved out of state years ago, she had different cookie options that we did---So, it could definitely still be different in different territories.

At least all my favorites made your list!!!

Thin Mints are always at the top!!!--We used to eat one box right away, and put another in the freezer--sometimes we'd forget about the second box, then open it months later...amazing...sigh...

Girl Scout cookies definitely vary depending on where you live...and my local scout in Pasadena last week offered me more than just the ones you listed, Tina -- my memory's hazy, but I know there was a berry one...

I'm very conventional in loving Thin Mints best. I also like the peanut butter sandwich cookies (never remember what they're called). Tagalongs always sound good, but end up disappointing me, for some reason...

This apparently has pictures of all the cookies offered anywhere this year: http://www.girlscoutcookies.org/

I loved those cookies with the sayings on them. I don't know what they were called. Just a regular cook with chocolate on the back and it would say FRIENDSHIP or something. Guess that's in the past!

In TX some troops, like mine, are selling 7 different types I think.

Nymfaux, interesting that your sister had different cookie options in another state! And yeah, Thin Mints rock either fresh or frozen!

Cara, thanks so much for your help with this--and the local perspective!

Liana, yes, I remember those...chocolate on one side, and maybe shortbread! Thanks for that memory!

Anon, thank you for sharing with the GS cookie scoop in Texas!

Hey, one more question! Anyone try the Girl Scout Cookie ice cream???

Marley Gibson said...

Which ones are the peanut butter covered in chocolate? Are they not selling shortbread anymore?

Peanut butter covered chocolate are tagalongs. And yeah, I miss the shortbreads, too.
