Thankful for Music

If you're like my family, we get into music (even more than usual) this time of year. In the last few weeks, my oldest son has taken up guitar (electric, of course) and my middle son spent a few days on our keyboard with my step-mom (who's a music teacher and came to spend Thanksgiving with us), quickly bringing his repertoire up to three merry tunes. We've all been singing in the car more than usual, too. My sons are into singing "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells." Let me just say they've added a BUNCH of verses since I was a kid. A favorite holiday tune that gets my whole family shakin' their stuff is Ricky Martin's "Ay ay ay It's Christmas." Click HERE to watch a video of some folks sorta doing what we do. (Making our own video is now on my To Do list.)
Whether listening to the radio, shopping, or going to the dentist, festive music is in full gear. And because the Buzz Girls have been discussing what we're thankful for this whole last week (and giving away cool prizes!), I would like to declare that this holiday season, I'm thankful for music.

Do you find yourself immersed in music this time of year? What are some of your most special holiday songs? Tell us and you'll be entered to win a signed copy of "I Believe You," an acoustic folk/jazz/inspirational CD by the lovely and talented Danielle Vaughn. (Note: She also has a magical holiday collection, Noel.) Tina will announce all the winners tomorrow (Monday, November 29). Good luck!!!

And, if you haven't already, click HERE to read some great writing advice the Buzz Girls recently shared with RT Book Reviews.

Wendy, I am goner for "Silent Night!" And Amy Grant's Christmas CD has been a tradition at our house for years.

I love, love, love Christmas music! I have to remind myself every year to not listen to it before Thanksgiving, I cheated this year though because I got the new Glee holiday cd and couldn't wait to try it out. I've got all my Christmas tunes uploaded on my ipod and I'm ready to sing the season away. My favorite Christmas carol is Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel, it gets me ready to greet the Christ Child every time.

Honestly, I am not a fan of Christmas songs because they are all overplayed and no longer get me in the Christmas spirit, but only annoy me at their unoriginality. However, there are a few songs that get me in the Christmas/holiday spirit. I like music that means something, and 'The Christmas Shoes' by Newsong. If you aren't familiar with the title, you might be familiar with the storyline. The song is about a little boy who wants to buy his dying mother shoes on Christmas Eve, but has no money, so he asks this man to buy them. Just thinking about the song gives me a chill and brings me close to tears. The song is so powerful and really brings back the whole reason for the holidays we celebrate.
To lighten my spirit, I like '12 Pains of Christmas,' which is a twist on 'The Twelve Days of Christmas.' I like the humor and I enjoy how it hits each annoyance about Christmas head on. We aren't celebrating so that we can put up decorations and send cards to people we never talk to, but it's about thinking why we celebrate whatever holiday we are accustomed to, or have chosen to celebrate.

Ooo! I'll have to check out the Glee holiday CD, sunnynikki!

Sara, me too! And it cracks me up when my youngest son tells me to be quiet. ;)

Steph, I do know that song and you're right; it captures the Christmas/holiday spirit perfectly.

Thanks for commenting. You're all entered to win the CD!!!
