Time Travel: Changing History

I just want to say how proud I am of Heather for her new book THE CLEARING. It's on order for me and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it.

Time travel has always fascinated me. I love movies with it (hello...SOMEWHERE IN TIME) and action sequences (STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME) and just the idea of it in general. Particularly...I wonder, if I went back in time and did even the slightest thing...would I alter history? Would I change my own existence?

Like...what if you went back in time and stopped Eve from eating the apple from the snake. What then?

What if you went back in time and warned the Titanic captain not to speed up and that there were iceburgs up ahead?

What if you went back in time and told Abraham Lincoln not to go to the theatre that night?

What if you went back in time and killed Hitler before he came to power?

(UGH...hate even putting that man's picture on the block. He still creeps me out!)

What if you went back in time and warned JFK not to ride in an open convertible through downtown Dallas?

Or happier things...like...

What if you went back in time and bet on the 1986 World Series outcome or told poor Bill Buckner to actually field ball?

What if you went back in time and invested all of your money into Microsoft before it took off to be the company it is today?

What if you went back in time and met your own parent in a freak car accident that caused them to not ask your future parent to the school dance? (LOL...I love BACK TO THE FUTURE.)

They say everything happens for a reason and, say, if you killed Hitler, then there would just have been another person like him to come along and maybe cause even worse events in history. It's that whole space/time continuum that the science fiction movies are so good at portraying.

If you could time travel to another time and alter an historical event, what would it be and why?

Altering an historical event...hmmmm, what about being far-fetched and saying you grab a doctor and take them back in time to treat diseases that could have been cured for writers (or other famous people) that died before their time (or at their time, depending on how you look at it, lol)???
None come to mine at the moment, except for some tuberculosis-related deaths...

I was thinking something similar--to stop people from giving tuberculosis-ridden blankets to Native Americans.

Great post, marley! Had completely forgotten about somewhere in time!

Wow that's a big question. All the things I can think of don't seem big enough! Maybe I'd go back to a point where I could help stop the Viatnam War from starting - or any war for that matter!

On a personal note I'd go back to the first time my dad smoked and yell at him not too! How life would be different if I could do that.

A wonderful post, Marley!

Well, taking a page from one of Diana Gabaldon's books, I've always wanted to travel back to a war-torn era and dispense antibiotics to those who could benefit from them.

I think I would probably go back in time and stop John Lennon's senseless shooting. We lost a great legend too soon.

If I had to pick one you have there I would stop the sinking of the Titanic, because a lot of innocent lives were lost.

But personally I would want to alter time when something truly tragic was happening, and try and help the people that were suffering. More than likely this would be during war or great national tragedy.

Altering a historical event? :( I can't think of one, there's just too many to decide on one.

I know this goes against all those who believe in evolution, but I would stop Charles Darwin from going to the Galapagos Islands. This probably won't give me any friends or books on here, but that's my opinion. :)

If I could alter a historical event I would stop WWII. I just feel the whole thing was senseless and too many lives were lost.

Marley, those are some very interesting 'what ifs'. Seriously, if I could, I'd be the one to kill Hitler before he came to power (ugh!).
Besides that, I'd want to stop the hiroshima nagasaki atomic bombings that changed the world so much. Basically, I'd wanna stop every war that ever took place and ruined so much.

Ooh this is a good one, Marley. But you know, when you start messing with time, then everything changes...!

Well...that's just it, Heather! I don't know if you remember the original Star Trek episode called "City on the Edge of Forever" where McCoy went through a time portal and saved a woman from being run over by a car...and it wiped out the existence of the Enterprise because she was a peace keeper and negotiated with Hitler and Roosevelt to stop the war...which was a good thing, but pacificism (sp) took over and no more techonology or developments came along...I'm doing a horrible job of explaining it, but yes. LOL!!

I would go back in recent time and try to warn everyone in Haiti's capital and surrounding areas that an earthquake was coming. Not sure if they would listen to me...but it would be worth a try, to say the least.

I would also go back further and expose the 9/11 hijackers before they got on the planes.

Then I would've gone back further to tell someone to put a stop to the dirty work that health insurance companies were partaking in (profiting from illness) before it got out of hand...now, it's out of hand.

Sorry, went on a rant there. I also liked what Jill said about going back to stop her dad from smoking, I'd do the same thing.

i'd tell everyone in thailand to head for high ground during the tsunami and i'd tell the folks in china about the coming earthquake. oh, and i wouldn't let the astronauts go up into space on those missions that exploded. geesh there's a lot i'd want to do.

Oh gosh, how to pick one?? Although I do agree with Heather's comment - once you mess with the past, you mess with the future too! But I think I would try go back only just last year and warn people of the Black Saturday bushfires. They were the worst we've ever had here in Australian and the news coverage we saw day in and out was devastating.

I'd want to go back and try to prepare them, maybe some people would evacuate earlier, have better plans in place for trying to save their homes, treasured possessions and most importantly - their lives and the the wildlife that was taken.

I would like to go back and keep a war from happening. They are all such a waste really. However, I dont think anyone would believe me.
