Winter Wonderlands...

Do you love snow?

Here in the Northwest, we got dumped on last night, and though this is the stuff awesome ski lodge snowbound romances are made of, it mostly just makes me stir crazy.

It's the start of Hanukkah tonight (love to all who are celebrating!!) and in Seattle, we always seem to have big storms right before the festival of lights. My bff cancelled her Hanukkah party, so today I got out the grater and made some latkes -- gotta have them or it's just not the holiday season.

The winter weather is also making travel plans a nightmare, with lots of cancelled flights, parties, and shopping trips. I did manage to hit Pike Place Market yesterday and got lots of little things for the people at work before the snow started falling in earnest. I'm thankful for stores like Cost Plus that have bargains and stay open, even during the white stuff. We're just not prepared for this much snow in most places on the West Coast, and people have a hard time driving in the white stuff. Rain is, of course, way easier for us out here.

I was trying to think of some funny snow stories, but mostly I just thought of times when I lived in the country and the pipes froze when the power went out (why didn't we buy a generator, ever?) Often, I cooked dinner on the woodstove, including one time when I fried fish and then made hush puppies. I think I must have been channeling the South that night. Or, there was the time I had to dig a "habitrail" for my Golden Retriever in two feet deep snow. Of course, he wasted no time soiling his labyrinth.

Anyway, one of the best things about the snow and being snow bound is having a great book to read. I love hunkering down with a great book, a mug of cocoa or cider, and a cozy blanket. Books work, even when the power goes out!

Ok, so post your favorite snow story. What was the funniest thing that ever happened during the snow?

Hugs and stay warm!

Heather

One winter, when I was in high school, some buddies and I spent a few days in a rustic little cabin in the mountains of northern Idaho. We had a huge storm come through one night and snow drifted to eves, effectively trapping us inside since the only door opened "out". There was only one small window in the loft and only one of us could squeeze through it.
Long story short, he climbed out, dug a huge hole so the door could swing open, carved steps so that we could get out of said hole, walked inside to tell us he had accomplished his task, and while doing so shut the door behind him. As soon as the door closed we heard the sound of snow sliding down the the tin roof -- completely filling in what had just been dug out! Fun times. Fuuuun tiiiimes!

This isn't funny, but playing off your comment about snow being boring. Lately, I've been remembering a blizzard and lengthy power outage when I was a teen...and I'm very aware that I now look on it with rose-colored glasses, how nice it was to cuddle up and hang out with my parents and brother. But at the time, it was cold and boring. =)

I didn't realize you were in Seattle, too! How come we've never met? Ooh, I see a little blue sky out there. Time to finish the snowman!
