So I don’t know why the following scenario came as such a surprise to me, but last week, I was grabbing the newspaper from the driveway and saying hello to a neighbor walking her dog. Same old, same old, until she asked why my feet never got cold.
It took a few moments to realize that:
a) she wasn’t asking IF but WHY;
b) they weren’t at all cold, I mean, yeah, the pavement was, but who cared;
and
c) I guess I always walk outside first thing in the morning barefoot.
Which, once inside, led to the realization that:
a) I always take off my shoes the moment I get home;
and
b) I only put them back on when I am leaving the neighborhood.
Which I then concluded maybe isn’t entirely normal? Especially since:
a) I hate the look of my feet so it would stand to reason that I’d want to keep them hidden;
and
b) I also hate (HATE) getting splinters and rocks in my feet which hurt and slow me down.
So what’s with a life of barefootin’? All I can say is that going shoe-less feels like freedom to me. It’s luxury, it’s making my own choices, it’s being slightly rebellious within the realm of socially acceptable.
Which I guess is me.
So tell us, shoes on or off for you? And any fave Joanie Bartel songs?

Hi,
I would never even know that name, but I do know the song. I go barefoot a lot, too. In fact, I'm looking at my toes as I type this. I especially love feeling things squish between them. I'll leave what squishes to your imagination.
LOL on the squishy, Janie! Joanie Bartels is a children's performer who put a whole bunch of kids' albums out in the '90's. I admit I stopped following her career after that, don't know if she's still goin' barefootin' or whatever...
I don't know any songs by Joanie Bartels but the lyrics of that song sound nice. And I LOVE going barefoot, it feels relaxing and fun :)
I'm totally the same way, Tina! The first thing I do when I step into my apartment or my parents' house is kick off my shoes and don't put them back on until we're about to get in the car. My mom and I are notorious for this (even on the blistering hot concrete of an Oklahoma summer).
Okay, I'm getting a great minds think alike vibe here. ;)
Great minds DO NOT think alike! :)
My shoes go on in the morning and come off when I go to bed! I've stepped on enough "things" in my life! 'Nuff said
I have tender little hooves so my feet stay covered outside, but I'm always barefooted inside.
I used to go barefoot a lot -- I think I have better balance that way. But you never know when you'll meet broken glass (evil!) or something that bites, so at some point I got out of the habit.
I'm almost always barefoot indoors, though -- except when my feet get too cold! (They are sometimes blocks of ice...they radiate pure cold...) :-)
Chuck, your great mind is akin to my husband's! He's a shoe guy, too!
Steph and Cara, you are in the house barefooters. Truth be told, that's probably wiser than my way!
I just discovered that today is National Go Barefoot Day! (or am I the last to know?) go to www.soles4soles.org or www.giveshoes.org for details!
I am a Barefoot Girl all the way. If it is ok for me to take off my shoes, I do. I love my flip flops because that is as close to being barefoot as I can get and still be able to shop. Plus, in AZ, you kinda need the freedom and air. Otherwise your feet will get too hot.

Yep, Meredith, I've spent lots of time in Arizona--I agree about flip-flops.
Chuck, are you kidding me about National Go Barefoot Day?!?
Wouled I kid! I found it in a reference book called, "Chase's Calendar of Events 2009".
I hate wearing shoes so much that I even wear sandals in the winter. I live in the South so it isn't like there is snow on the ground or anything but it still gets cold. I try to wear shoes but my feet start to feel claustrophobic.
I have to say that I have NO clue who Joanie Bartels is! LOL!! I'm so out of it.
