Hooray for Tera!!!
Scene One: Our heroine, Heather, arrives – a scrawny sixth grader with major geeky clothes, headgear and horrific haircut by my grandmother’s beauty operator, Ruby. Immediately, the older campers (9th graders) in the cabin comment on hair style, clothes, lack of bust development, and say, “it’s good you wear eyeshadow because we’d never have known you were a girl.” Ugh. I want to hit them, but it’s church camp and I’m a lover, not fighter, so I just avoid them after that.
Cut to –
Scene Two: Couple of days later, after sitting next to me at campfire one time, an geeky boy named Jim thinks he is my boyfriend. He is short (sorry) has Coke bottle glasses and a haircut that resembles floppy ears of a Cocker Spaniel. I keep telling him, he is not my boyfriend. Jim thinks this is just me being playful. He follows me. Everywhere.
Did a boy ever crush on you at summer camp? What did you do? Did it end better than my ill-fated romance at Camp Burton?
Hugs,
Heather

This week we’re celebrating the launch of buzz girl Tera Lynn Child’s Goddess Boot Camp. Each day we’ll give away a copy of the book – so be sure to comment after you read each post. Winners will be announced this weekend.
Ah, the glories of summer camp. I can only tell you that it was not the most fun experience for me. My parents often packed me (one of four kids) off to Camp Burton, which was only a ferry ride away from Seattle but might as well have been on another planet.

Scene Three: Jim and I “break up” in front of many, many people. It’s the only way I can get him to stop following me. More geeky hilarity ensues. You get the idea.
Anyway, I ended up writing a summer camp into my debut, Never Cry Werewolf, and that was a great way to dredge up those treasured memories.

I've never really been to camp before... so I'ven ever had a crush at camp
:) Erica
I don't know if any boys had a crush on me, but I sure had a lot of crushes on the boys!
Like Mrs. V, I'm pretty sure I had more crushes on boys than the other way around. Maybe there were a few, but I was too focused on my own crush to notice. =(
Congrats Tera!!!!
Ahhh, young love. There was a guy who had a crush on me in camp once. It was flattering but creepy creepy, as he wouldn't stop even after we continued our normal school routine. What happened was that I had an urge to cut my hair, and went to this horrible hairdresser who gave me a boy's haircut. So apparently he was in love with my hair, as after wards he stopped all the following. xD Ahhh, good times.
I did four years of Girl Scout camp. One year I had the biggest crush on one of the guys who worked in the kitchen. I think I was 12; he was at least 16. I sooooo wanted him to notice me. And he did. I was so busy staring at him once that the cook trying to hand me a bowl to take out to the table had to shout "Here, here" to get my attention. So he called me Here Here for the rest of the week. Not the way I wanted to be noticed. :-(
The only summer camp I went to (for four days...see Tuesday's post) was all girl only. So no crushes.
And Heather, funny line about the eyeshadow. But if those counselors could see your loveliness now, they'd all be jealous!
Like I said before, I never been to summer camp...but it sure sounds fun!

I have only been to girl scout camp so there was never any boys.
Again am not sure if this counts per se, but at the classes/practices/exercises there was this kid named Jonah. (And god help me, but it has been at least eight years since I even laid eyes on the kid and I still hear about him, I will have GREAT-grand children and still hear about him) My sister and friend who also skated were convinced that we were destined to be together. They were constantly going "Oh your so cute together." "Look at them."
And I admit he was cute. The only problem is that one, I do not go for male figure skaters (to egotistical and think they are god's gift to women)and two, I am pretty sure he was/is gay(about two years after camp, he went to NY to sing in a broadway play)so as much as my sister tries to tell me otherwise, it really would NOT have worked out.
Actually for someone who has not been to camp before (in the true camp way) I do have a fair amount of boy stories during that week. Most of them involve hockey players though.
xoxo
I never went off to camp so now I feel like I've missed out. Sniff, sniff.
You guys are so funny! Thanks for sharing the camp memories. And I'm sorry for those of you who didn't get to go to camp before. Nowhere else (but reality TV) can you experience such a world of teen drama in a week. ;)
I also missed this, went to a school week camp, with no crushes..: (
