The pros and cons of after-school jobs...

You know, I'm just having to look away from the antics of Britney (and her new gal pals, Paris and Lindsey) and the many, many links and Spams related to her "flashing." That's some buzz I'd rather not talk about. Maybe they need after-school jobs to keep them from making trouble and off the tabloid covers.

My niece, Stephanie, has a love/hate relationship with her after-school job. She started last year at Publix grocery store as a bagger, but has since worked her way up to the check-out counter. She follows the footsteps of her older sister (by four years) who also started as a bagger, then checker before moving into "the back office" where they handle the accounting.

Stephanie says her job "sucks raw eggs," not that she's ever sucked raw eggs. I mean, who'd want to? But there's also a plus side to things on the job...Cute guys!

Yep, that's right. There are apparently two baggers and a shelf-stocker (don't know the formal name for that job) that are "brutally hot" and Steph gets to flirt with them mercilessly from her perch behind the scanner. Before work, she takes extra time to flat-iron her hair, get her mascara just right and always wears those cute jeans that make her booty look ever-so JLo-esque.

The only problem is while flirting, she still has to deal with the not-so-friendly customers who demand certain change, have excuses when their credit cards don't work, want their groceries bagged a particular way and generally have no time to even thank Steph for checking them out.

Oh yeah, and the green Publix apron is so not from the pages of Vogue or Marie Claire.

Course, Steph's got it easy compared to her friends. One guy works at his dad's farm cleaning pig pens (like...ewww...) and one of her girl friends answers phones at her mother's insurance office in the afternoon (zzzzzzz...) and another chica works at a convenience store where all the dirty old men come in, stare at her boobage area and buy Florida lotto tickets.

Yep...Steph's got it made with the cute baggers. Over the last year she saved up enough money for a downpayment on a tight new whip - a maroon Chevy Cavalier that she's totally styling in.

For that, she'll don the Publix apron and put up with snotty customers.

What's been your after-school work experience? Did you love it or hate it? Any love interests form there? Let us hear your stories!

I totally worked at Subway and Blockbuster. At Blockbuster there was an adorable guy who worked with me (even though he was two years younger) and we dated one summer. I loved working at Blockbuster. Subway was okay, but a lot different and less "fun". (BMT at Subway actually means Biggest Meatiest Tastiest but few people actually know that little fact :)

Funny, just yesterday, I was talking about my first job. Back before one-hour-photos, there was a drive-thru photo place called Fotomat, and for about 2 years, I worked inside a little booth. It was terrific for me on a number of levels, not the least of which being it gave me an excuse to duck out of things I didn't want to do, whether it was family stuff or social things that made me uncomfortable. "Sorry, I gotta work". It worked like a charm. :)

I loved Fotomat! That was the coolest concept.

My first job was working as a typist for my best friend's father who was a private investigator. I would transcribe his notes onto the typewriter for him and file it. Problem was, I worked too fast and he didn't have enough to keep me busy, so I only worked for him for two days. LOL!!

Other than that, I worked on my dad's farm and cleaning my grandfather's office for which he gave me a WHOPPING $2!!!

At least my sister got to work at Hardees and bring home free roast beef sammiches and vanilla milk shakes!

I worked at Wendy's and learned never to eat their chili again cause its the leftover meat from the burgers that falls under the grill, the grease and they just put beans and sauce in with it.

Anon--eeeeewwww on the chili! Thanks for that heads-up.

Fotomat no longer exists (at least I don't think it does) but I CAN tell you we totally looked at everybody's pictures, even though we swore we didn't.

You know, Anon...I'd heard that before about Wendy's. Good thing I don't eat the chili. Now...#7 Biggie Size with a Diet Coke...that's another story. = )

I did the Wendy's thing. Snore. Oh, but I did get a summer job working with the forest service with a bunch of of guys who were only to happy to flirt with me and do the hard stuff. Other than that I pretty much hated working.

My son worked at the ice arena where my daughter skates for a year and a half... he did good, but it was too much when he started this college program.

Daughter now coaches there part time and gets her own private students as soon as she turns 16.

I don't know how kids do it. School and and a job is a lot for a teen.

Cool blog. Found you through Blogger home page.

A few years ago I had to work at Dominos as a delivery person when I was in grad school. I was delivering pizzas late one night and left the car running and it got stolen. So I had to walk back to Dominos with only the pizza money in my pocket. Talk about sucking "raw eggs."

Hmmm... not sure about the Wendy's that "anonymous" worked at. Meat from under the grill? That's just sick! The one I worked at just used the burger patties that were well done for the chili, and I didn't find anything wrong with that. *My* problem w/ working for Wendy's was my name happens to be Wendy and I had long, reddish hair, so you can just imagine the teasing. But sometimes it was fun, and it was a great way to meet cute guys.

Speaking of cute guys, I met my first boyfriend when I was pushing carts at Safeway. He was picking up his buddy who was a checker and he asked about me and then we started dating. He met me after work one night and brought me a rose and that was the setting of my first kiss. He was in his truck and leaned out to kiss me and I'm not even kidding when I say I FELL OVER!

But that's not nearly as bad as poor Andrew! What happened after the car was stolen? And did you keep working at Dominoes, or did you have to quit for lack of transportation?

Fun subject, Mar.

These stories are SO great! My first job was at the local hardware store. It was a fun job with the exception of being 16 and having perverted old men come to the check-out counter and say, "Wanna screw?" while holding up their hardware purchase. I swear I heard it ten times a day. I met a lot of great people working there and we had fun. The only thing I regret is that I took on too many responsibilities and hours and ended up missing some school functions because of it. If I had to do it all over again I would only work in summers and Christmas vacations!
