Bravo's New Show: Platinum Hit

Last night Bravo TV premiered the first episode of their new show Platinum Hit. It is a Top Chef/Project Runway-like competition for singer-songwriters. Jewel is the host and former American Idol judge Kara Dioguardi is the head judge. Here's the official season preview:

What I loved most about the first episode (and what I think I'll love most about the series) is that it's almost like a writing competition. Watching the songwriters create their lyrics, their hooks, their melodies, is almost like watching the writing process. I think it's as close to a So You Think You Can Write show as we'll get on television.

And a couple of the first episode songs were just amazing. Ah. Maze. Ing. I'm in awe of the process of putting words to music (my musical intelligence is definitely a weakness) and I hope the season lives up to the first show.

Did you watch Platinum Hit? What'd you think?

Save Us Spartacus

Part of me really wants to post something about the disaster in Japan today, but I think it's still too raw (and continuing and uncertain) for me to write about yet. So instead I'll take my cue from Tina (one of my favorite things to do here on the Buzz blog) I'm going to talk about a favorite premium cable TV show.

Σπάρτακο

I blame Sophie Jordan for my introduction to Spartacus. (And True Blood for that matter—curse her and her irresistible premium cable channels!)

The tag line for season one was Blood and Sand and boy is that fitting. I have never seen a bloodier show. It's almost B-movie horror flick epic proportions of blood, but there is something magical about the cinematography that turns it into more of an artistic effect than a gory mess.

It is the amazingly emotional story of a Thracian soldier who, betrayed by Rome, is sold into slavery and becomes a gladiator. His wife is also taken and he is driven to win by the desire to earn his freedom and find her. The title character is played by Andy Whitfield. (Yum, yum. Yum, yum-yum, yum.)

And he's Welsh, to boot!

(Sadly, Andy had to bow out of the series to undergo treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Think good thoughts for this sexy, talented man.)

If you're looking for a show that appeals to guys (action and intrigue and—since this is premium cable—plenty of ladies without their clothes) and girls (hot sweaty warrior guys, 'nuff said) that has both wonderful stories and strong emotional journeys, and you're not afraid of a little (a whole freakin' lot of) blood, the definitely give Spartacus a try. It's available instantly via Netflix.

Now excuse me while I go catch up on season two, Gods of the Arena.

Hollywood Premiere!

So, I'm in SoCal and tonight, I'm going to my first Hollywood premiere party! Okay...so it's not for the GHOST HUNTRESS...yet...but it's for my friend's show that she's on called STORAGE WARS on A&E...check it out...

Hope you'll tune in. My friend, Kathy, is on the 10th episode.

I have a storage unit and I've seen people at the lot gathering around for the auctions. It's really a free-for-all. I had no idea that there were professionals who went to scope things out and turn a profit. Totally fascinating. I bet this new show will have people paying the tab on their storage locker! (I think mine's up for renewal in March. LOL!!)

Do you have a storage unit? Would you ever go storage diving to find a wealthy jewel?

Hugs,

Lawyers and Zombies and Hellcats, Oh My!

Yesterday, Tina started a discussion about upcoming movies, and today I'm going to take it to the small screen. Fall is in the air, and lucky for the TV-obsessed masses (myself included) this means more than pumpkins and chilly weather. It means the Fall TV lineup.

There are some new shows I'm already loving.

The Walking Dead -- There's nothing super original about this zombie apocalypse series so far (there are shades of 28 Days Later and just about every other great zombie flick) but it more than makes up for it in character, story, and production values.

Hellcats -- This show had me at Hellcats. It's got lots of great elements: cheerleaders, pre-law, drunk mom, cute boys, and The Tiz with brown hair. Also, Aly Michalka is pretty awesome. Win-win-win. Check out this preview.

The Defenders -- I don't generally watch tons of comedy, but with Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell starring is slick Las Vegas lawyers, I'll make an exception.

There are a few shows that are right up my alley, but I haven't watched yet.
  • Nikita
  • Undercovers
  • The Event
Are you watching any of those? Should I start?

As a die-hard fan of the series, I can't believe I missed the first few episodes of Law & Order: Los Angeles! I'll remedy that tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it fares better than Law & Order: Trial by Jury

I had really high hopes for Hawaii Five-0 (Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan, and Daniel Dae Kim, what?) but the first couple episodes were so disappointing that I took it off my DVR list. Can a network please give Alex O the starring role in a series that will stick around for more than a season, please?

But never fear, there are new episodes of some old favorites starting up soon.
Tell me, what on your Fall TV "Must See" list? Anything I've missed?

Let the Food Wars Begins

It all began with Top Chef. I was in Boston for my first, last, and only semester of the PhD program from hades. One of my greatest joys was watching the third season of Project Runway. As the season finale neared, Bravo started bombarding me with commercials for the new season of Top Chef. I'd never watched a cooking show in my life, and I wasn't really interested.

But then Bravo did a brilliant thing. The showed the season premiere of Top Chef right after the season finale of Project Runway. I was feeling lazy and didn't want to walk back downstairs from the lounge to my room. So I stayed. And watched.

I was love at first Quick Fire. I've been a devoted Top Chef watcher ever since. And my newfound love for cooking-related shows has expanded to include some other terrific competitions.

Food Network Challenge ranges from building massive architectural structures out of chocolate to an ultimate pancake cook-off to cakes of unimaginable design and proportion. I'm halfway watching to see if something goes horribly wrong, and halfway watching to see the amazing edibles the contestants produce.

On the very first episode of Cupcake Wars, vegan baker Chloe took home the prize--much to the annoyance of the other more experienced chefs. (The rumors are true! Vegan cupcakes are better than regular.) Watching this show just makes me hungry and more often than not drives me to the kitchen to whip up my own cupcake creation.

My newest favorite is The Great Food Truck Race. Nine food truck teams from across the country drive from destination to destination, trying to make the most money in a given time period. There are challenges along the way and the team that makes the least money goes home each week. I totally want to have a food truck now.

There's a new show on the horizon. Top Chef Just Desserts premiers soon and it promises to be just like Top Chef on with DESSERTS! It's going to be hosted by Top Chef judge Gail Simmons and I think it's going to be amazing. I'm sure to be in a sugar coma by the time the season's done.

I'm still not a fan of the traditional cooking show (I think I don't like someone on TV telling me what to do or how to do it) but I'm definitely a food competition junkie. What about you? Do you watch any of these shows? Do you watch cooking shows like Rachael Ray or Giada de Laurentiis? Are you a wanna be chef or a hopeless disaster in the kitchen?

Do You Hulu?

TV viewing has gone through a lot of changes since I graduated from high school. First there were TV shows on DVD (totally unheard of the early 90s), followed quickly by NetFlix home delivery. Then there were DVRs which, to be honest, I totally did not get at first. Now I can't imaging not being able to record something while I'm away or to pause if I have to run get my dog off the fence (it happens).

When I was in grad school at Tufts, with no TV in my room, I was grateful for iTunes and their supply of Survivor episodes. (They save me from a lot of winter- and study-induced insanity.)

But now there is something new. Something better. Something totally free. Hulu!

Basically Hulu is a website were networks can stream there clips, interviews, and complete episodes. They don't always include all the episodes from every season, but some are better than none, right? Some popular new shows are there (like Psych, Dollhouse, and Glee) as well as some classic faves (like Inspector Gadget, Three Moons Over Milford, and Buffy). Just click and view. So easy.

What about you? Do you Hulu?

Deadliest Weekend

While normal people were out celebrating the long weekend with barbecues and softball games, I spent the last three days glued to the three day marathon of my latest obsession: Deadliest Catch.

The show chronicles the king and opilio (snow) crab fishing seasons of a handful of vessels crazy enough to attempt this work. Alaskan crab fishing is the most—the most!—dangerous job in the world. Men die every year. Sometimes many men. And yet, they go out year after year, season after season, risking their lives for the sake of a big haul and an even bigger payday. (The men can earn upwards of $50,000 in less than a month, sometimes in less than a week.)

But the huge draw to this show isn't only the phenomenal risk involved in the job, it's the character of the men who take on that risk. Their personalities range from the quiet and unassuming to the in-your-face and outrageous. The only two constants are a willingness to work hard (and I do mean HARD) and the mental toughness to withstand the weather, the unending (and somethings uninterrupted) hours of backbreaking labor, and the possibility of death looming around every minor mishap.

I admit to having favorites. I'm a Northwestern girl. The Northwestern is a fishing vessel owned and operated by the Hansen brothers; captain Sig (right), engineer Norman (left), and deck boss Edgar (second from left). These boys are the heirs of a Norwegian fishing dynasty and they are never boring. Sig is the slave-driver, pushing the guys to the breaking point (but not beyond—because I don't think they have one) from the wheel house. (He's also on Twitter.) Edgar is the loudmouth prankster who keeps everyone laughing and safely on their toes. Norman is the silent, elusive, and camera-shy one that, well, you just don't know much about.

Sigh, I just can't get enough.

I can't pick a favorite, either. If you've seen the show (or even if you haven't) which Hansen brother is more your style? The boss, the quiet guy, or the joker? (They are, incidentally, the oldest, middle, and youngest.)

If you've never watched Deadliest Catch, give it a try. Here's a quick video to get you started.

If you want to see more, the Discovery Channel is showing three back-to-back episodes tonight. You might just find yourself hooked and eager for the next weekend marathon.

Kids Incorporated

Some of you may be too young to remember this show (if you are, please keep it to yourself--you're making me feel old), but back in the 80s this was one of my favorites. It basically featured kids my age (at the time) singing cover versions of top pop hits. Here's the theme song.

Although not quite as star-studded as the Mickey Mouse Club, Kids Incorporated can claim to have launched Stacy Ferguson (aka Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (aka the Ghost Whisperer). Here are a couple of my favorite Kids Inc videos. Enjoy the retro 80s flashback.

This is Stacy (Fergie) singing the Lionel Ritchie hit Say You, Say Me. (No, I don't get the clown either.)

How about the show's yummy Ryan Lambert signing Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer? I love this one.

Rahsaan Patterson covering Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' by Michael Jackson.

And, finally, Martika Marrero signing Patty Smyth's the Warrior. (In my opinion, Martika had the best voice of anyone on the show.)

Wanna see more? Check out tons of their videos on the Kids Incorporated YouTube channel. Now, be honest. What do you think? Cheesy or awesome or a little of both?

The Theme of the Day is ... Castles

As we speak--er, read?--a group of talented young adult authoresses are spending their days lounging, chatting, and writing in AN IRISH CASTLE! I kid you not. You can read all about Operation Writing Castle (which includes a list of the authors involved) and the details on How To Rent a Castle on Ally Carter's blog. You can even follow their TeamCastle Tweets as they report back live from the emerald isle. Sigh, jealousy. I'm picturing something like this:

(Photo borrowed from the Dunluce Castle website.)

But, alas, there are more big Castle-related doings this week. Namely, the series premiere of ABC's new show, Castle. I knew this show was coming up, but had totally forgotten it until I just happened to tune in to Dancing With the Stars (which I never watch) and then happened to hear them mention Castle starting after the show. Thank goodness!

Castle is about a bestselling mystery author who gets called in by the police department when a pair of murders replicate murders from his book. Soon their on the hunt for a deranged fan ... and maybe more.

What I loved about this show:
  1. Nathan Fillion (of Firefly fame). Heart him. Big time. (see above)
  2. Writer as protagonist. Maybe some of his career-related details are a little unbelievable, but, hey, I'm not a bestselling author (yet!) so what do I know? This also relates to my post about Why I Love Psych, where I proposed that Shawn would make a great writer because he's so observant. Now we get to see a writer be a great detective because he's so observant. Love.
  3. Cameos by James Patterson (mega-bestselling author) and Stephen J Cannell (also a bestselling author and producer of almost every great 80s detective show you can think of) at Castle's weekly poker game.
This is one of those shows that I'm afraid isn't going to make it past one season. But I'm determined to enjoy it while I can!

Parties and Football and Ghost Hunting, oh my!

Just like Tera Lynn's post, I find myself in a frenetic whirlwind of events and things to do. My brain is so fried, I don't know if I can compose a proper blog post, so I'll follow TLC's lead with all the things going:

1. Spent the weekend outside of Atlanta at my agent and fabulous author, Deidre Knight's, book launch for her new Gods of Midnight Series with the first book RED FIRE. Here we are enjoying the lovely evening:

2. Stayed up late last night finishing up edits/proofs on the galley of my first ghost book, GHOST HUNTRESS: THE AWAKENING. (Got an e-mail from my editor just now saying she's reading GHOST HUNTRESS: THE GUIDANCE and "is loving it so far!"

3. Doing a last-minute party for the sales desk at my work. Pulling it off tonight at a downtown hotel bar with is really, really nice, so I've got all that going on.

4. Tonight is TV night and I'm sooooooooo far behind on my DVR list! Tonight is America's Next Top Model, and the Project Runway finale. There's also new Ghost Hunters and let's not forget The Debacle...I mean, The Debate. I've got several episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, Haunting Evidence, Ugly Betty, and Ghost Whisperer to watch and catch up on. What an eclectic list, eh?

5. Tomorrow is my hubby's b-day and a VERY important element of his gift is missing. Stupid Amazon. Better get here today!

6. Friday night, we're going to go see...SWOOOOOON...Rick Springfield in concert. Never in my life would I have told you that I had the hots for a 60 year old man! LOL!! He rocks, though, and God bless Mike for going with me. Fourth row, baby!

7. Saturday, I'm joining my friends with the New England Ghost Project for their Spectral Evidence session in Salem, Massachusetts as part of the whole Festival of the Dead. We'll do a little ghost hunting and experimenting with new equipment.

8. Not to mention that my Crimson Tide is ranked #2 and playing on CBS Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET) against the Ole Miss Rebels. When will I have time to watch?

9. Sunday is my monthly RWA chapter meeting...if I can find the strength to wake up and drive there. LOL!!

10. Check myself into the hospital after doing all of this! LOLOL!!

What do you have planned for the weekend? Family fun? Football? A concert? Let us know!

Hugs,

You Heard It Here First!

Well, Buzz Blog readers, you really are on the cutting edge. You are the very first group to hear my announcement (and it's a good one, too).

Drumroll and fireworks please...

OH. MY. GODS. (aka my first novel) has just been optioned for TV by a company called FREEMANTLE on behalf of ASHLEY TISDALE!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Ashely Tisdale (of High School Musical and Suite Life fame) will spend the next year deciding whether she wants to turn OMG into a TV show (or made for TV movie, I'm not sure). Ashley Tisdale, who just happens to have been voted Most Perfect Stella in my Casting Call contest last week, might actually wind up starring in it.

The high I'm feeling right now is second only to the high of selling my book in the first place. In other words, I am beyond on top of the world.

No Post Today ... Psych!

(How totally vintage was that slang?)

Friday night marked the season premiere of my absolute, hands-down, all-time favorite TV show: PSYCH

If you haven't seen this series (it's on USA on Friday nights in the late slot) then please, for the love of all that is hilarious, watch it!

Why do I love this show so very much? Let's examine ...

Maybe it's because the main characters, Shawn and Gus, are almost my same age. They've been best friends since forever and the show always features a scene from their youth (aka my youth) that parallels the plot of that episode. Plus, their vintage 80s references are pure nostalgia.

Maybe it's because I've always secretly wanted to be a private detective, but I could never have possibly pulled off pretending to be a psychic to get cases. Thanks to intense training by his uber-cop dad, Shawn is hyper-observant and solves cases by noticing (and interpreting) details that others miss.

Maybe it's because the ensemble cast is a perfect storm of talented characters. James Roday plays the bold, often immature, and yet somehow brilliant Shawn. His bff Gus is played by Dule Hill (who played a very serious role on West Wing, but is a genius straight man). Corbin Bernsen plays Shawns uber-cop dad who is beyond embarassed that his son is not only a private detective, but also a (fake) psychic. (The rest of the cast is equally brilliant, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to read a book-length essay on the matter.)

Maybe it's because the writing, directing, editing, acting, and pretty much everything involving this show seems to work seamlessly together to achieve a single goal: making me laugh.

I've already picked up the first two seasons on DVD (partly because I've also gotten my parents addicted to the show, partly because I needed to free up the space on my DVR) and plan on watching every new episode until, well, forever. You know where I'll be on Friday nights!

(Also, check out their website. It's awesome.)

Hugs,
TLC

It's Showtime!

Sorry for the late blogging today. Long day at work and had to take the train home. UGH!

So, I spent yesterday holed up on the couch with the cable OnDemand watching Showtime's new series, The Tudors. All I can say is...wow. There's a lot of buzz on this series that will premiere on April 1st. Here's a preview of what you have to look forward to...

Yummy little Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who most people know from Bend it Like Beckham or TV's Elvis, for which he earned a Golden Globe, but I've been a fan of since Velvet Goldmine.

The buzz about this series is it features the young, virile, studly Henry VIII and not the fat, beaded guy who ate whole turkey legs that we see in so many portraits of the time. The first two episodes really showcase Henry's tenacity to be remembered after he's gone...to go down in history as someone famous who left a mark on humanity. He also had a voracious appetite for the ladies.

Check out the Showtime website for details, history, bios and everything about the show. It's really quality television. They've really done a great job promoting it.

What other TV shows do you plan to check out in the spring/summer as replacements are coming on? I admit, I'm watching the same favorites: America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty and a new favorite with one of my favorite people, Eddie Izzard, The Riches.

Let us hear what you're watching!
