The buzz on Betty's

One of my favorite sayings of all time is, "She's a total Betty." The way I always understood this was that the girl being described was a hottie. Like Betty from Archie. The sweet, smart, girl next door constantly vying for Archie's attention. But recently a friend told me that this wasn't the Betty intended for this statement at all.

But that the true Betty intended was Betty Boop. Well, this gives a whole new meaning to "She's a total Betty." So now does being a Betty mean that you are kind of a sex object? And as if this wasn't confusing enough, now another Betty gets thrown into the mix.

So now because of the popularity of Ugly Betty, does being a Betty mean that you are homely but have a heart of gold? I'm stumped. And leave it to America Ferrara to go and complicate things further by spouting her political beliefs during an awards ceremony certainly resulting in the loss of viewers, but more importantly, causing me to ask, "Is being a Betty" mean that you stand up for what you believe in, no matter what the cost?"

I think I'll stick to my original definition. And don't even think about telling me that this saying isn't cool because I'm totally bringing Betty back. If you'd like to see what else bush and Betty have in common besides America's speech, swallow all your liquids, then click here. http://www.bettybeauty.com

Do you have a favorite saying that others insist is lame? Do tell.

Hey, Steph, what a clever post! It's been ages since I've heard that Betty line, and it's fun to have it back in my brain...

And following up on an earlier post about UGLY BETTY here at the Buzz Girls, I did as I vowed and caught up on the episodes on the website--loved it--and now I'm a total Betty fan, too. :)

Calling someone a Betty always makes me think of Clueless, which reminds me of another Clueless-catchphrase that never took off (at least not in my circle): "He says you gave him a toothache," meaning "he thinks your sweet." That, and also "sweating" a guy never struck me as particularly flattering compliments... But what do i know? Maybe I'll bring 'em back into my vocab to see what happens!
Fun post, btw. I've never watched Ugly Betty, but America Ferraro is a cutie. And I didn't know about the whole "spouting her political beliefs" thing--makes me like her even more!!

This makes me think of how much I loved Betty Boop growing up!

As for sayings...I don't really have any that means various things. But I do tend to say, "Okay, cool guy." When people are acting uncool. *snort*

There are probably a lot of people who think it's lame!! :) :)

Alex is so right. The Betty thing is totally Clueless and kind of surfer.

My fave catch phrase is "Are you picking up what I'm laying down?" My friend Jen and I say it to each other as a joke and totally laugh our butts off. Sometimes we mix it up on accident and say, "Are you throwing up what I'm picking down?"

I always connected it to Betty Boop but thought I was wrong! I don't know why exactly... maybe I thought it went back further than the cartoon...

I think the only phrase I find myself using that's kind of out of the ordinary is "and all that jazz," which most of my friends didn't get before Chicago came out on the big screen, thought was sort of quippy while it played, and make fun of me for still saying so far after the fact.

Other than that, I don't really stay faithful to sayings. I kind of suck up whatever I'm surrounded by at the moment. When I'm reading Harry Potter it's a lot of "bloody hell," via Ron, for example. Last weekend I found myself saying "Lamer" a lot, which had never happened before, which I think I can blame on seeing Bring it On for the first time. Haha
