Ringing in the New Year...

We had a New Year’s Eve party at my house last week, with a small group of family and friends. But there was one visitor who arrived without invitation...or welcome: a cold/flu virus, who slammed into me about two hours before the first guest arrived, and refused to let go. I’m sorry to say I had to eventually leave the party in my husband’s capable hands, and that my New Year’s toast was a slug of Nyqil in a bathroom.

So that said, and this being the start of a New Year, I’d like to think illness is behind me, and look forward to a totally healthy New Year. I’m going to keep up the exercise, try to drink more water, and eat my veggies.

And I’d love to hear what you do to stay in the pink. What works to keep you healthy? Or, at the first hint of illness, what do you do to fight it off?

Aw Tina, I'm so sorry you are (were?) sick.

A few years ago I discovered the surefire method to keep myself from getting sick. When I notice the first sign of illness (an oddly achy back, draining into my throat, unusual tiredness) I sleep. A lot. Like, an extra eight to twelve hours in a day.

(I know this isn't possible for a lot of people, but, as I tell my mom, wouldn't you rather give up one day to sick prevention than an entire week to being sick?)

This works every time--except for this winter. Maybe I wasn't paying attention to my body, or maybe I had too many things to do that I didn't want to give up, but I've been sick at least twice.

But usually it works, I swear.

(Also, drink lots of orange juice and take extra vitamin C and echinacea.)

Feel better!

Hi Tina,
Sorry to hear that you were sick. I am a firm believer in homeopathic prevention. At the first sign or when I'm around someone who is sick, I take Airborne and Umcka. I have to say that it works! Especially, the Umcka. It's from Germany, I think, and you have to get it at Whole Foods or a Health Food Store. And no, I'm not getting cut of the profits!

Very interesting, TLC, about the sleep BEFORE you get sick. I generally only take to bed AFTER.

And Janie, I tried Airborne at the onset of that illness, but I'm thinking I should have gone with the Bigger Gun. Next time, it's Umcka.

Thanks!

I feel your pain, Tina. I got the stomach flu the Sunday after Christmas. I was down for three days then thought I was better and overdid it on NYE which resulted in two more days of sickness. I agree with Tera's sleep sure because anytime I get too tired, I instantly get sick. I'm glad you are feeling better. I am too. And I've done remarkably well on my diet so far! ;)

I'm glad you're better, too, Steph, and congrats on the diet! I'm just starting to get back into shape, resuming the exercise.

I got flus in the new year too, like twice, and it was horrible. Illness ruins the fun hey? But it's good you're feeling now : D I hope you get perfectly well soon.

Yuck, T -- Sick is no fun. I tried the zinc stuff - I think it's zicam which is a preventer when you think a cold is coming and it worked pretty well.

Feel better soon!

hugs,

Heath
